Attacks on CDC Leadership Crisis
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Doctors for America PO Box: 21161 2300 18th St NW Lbby Washington, DC 20009-9996 September 3, 2025 Doctors for America Alarmed by the Attacks on CDC Leadership Crisis WASHINGTON, D.C. – Doctors for America is deeply concerned about this week’s firing of CDC director Dr. Susan Monarez, along with the subsequent resignations of senior scientific leaders, including Dr. Debra Houry, Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, Dr. Daniel Jernigan, and Dr. Jennifer Layden. The sustained attacks on public health have resulted in the loss of critical expertise from one of our nation’s most vital public health agencies at a time when science-driven leadership is needed more than ever. For decades, the CDC has been the backbone of data-driven guidance that protects families and communities from public health threats. Its leadership has played a critical role in safeguarding communities during crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the Zika outbreak, and numerous natural disasters. The sudden ousting of these experienced leaders amid budget cuts and workforce reductions that occurred earlier this year further erodes public confidence. This leaves our nation more vulnerable to preventable health crises, including infectious disease outbreaks and bioterror attacks. This leadership disruption leaves the nation more vulnerable to preventable health crises, including infectious disease outbreaks, natural disasters, bioterror threats, and the worsening opioid epidemic. At a time when misinformation spreads quickly and trust in institutions is fragile, undermining the CDC’s independence threatens the health security of every family in America. Doctors for America calls on federal leaders to: Restore stability and integrity within the CDC by reappointing scientific experts and supporting their independent work, free from political bias. Communicate clearly and transparently with the public about the agency’s direction, leadership, and commitment to science-based decision-making. Recommit to robust funding and workforce support that enables the CDC to fulfill its mission of protecting the health of every community in the nation. As physicians and health advocates, we stand firmly with the dedicated and brave professionals at the CDC who work tirelessly to protect public health at both local and national levels. These experts have consistently prioritized science and service over politics, working tirelessly to prevent disease, respond to crises, and promote the health of every American. The safety and well-being of families across the country depend on preserving the independence, strength, and credibility of our nation’s foremost public health agency. At this critical moment, America cannot afford a weakened CDC. We continue to call on our federal leaders to affirm their commitment to improving the health of all Americans by urging Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to resign or be removed. Our Nation deserves the appointment of a leader who is committed to restoring public trust and protecting the health of our communities through the use of science and evidence-based medicine. ### About Doctors for America:
