Jersey General Hospital working to resolve WiFi issues
Exclusive: The Government of Jersey has confirmed that it is still working to resolve the WiFi issues, which delayed updates to the electronic patient record (EPR) at Jersey General Hospital last year. Plans to update the hospital’s MAXIMS EPR system were delayed in August 2024, owing to “patchy WiFi”, according to the ‘2024 annual report for Q2’ published by the Government of Jersey’s Health and Community Services. Martin Carpenter, health chief information officer at the Government of Jersey, told Digital Health News in August 2025 that the key areas are “mostly resolved” with a plan to fully resolve these by the end of 2025. “Some tactical improvements were implemented in 2024, with a strategic plan to upgrade WiFi across the hospital in 2025. “This was to allow and enable new replacement equipment to work efficiently and to eliminate dead spots in working areas of the hospital. “Working in conjunction with our local telecoms provider, JT, the work is progressing to specification, to time and budget, with positive feedback from hospital staff.” He added that the hospital has rolled out eDischarge; whiteboards; the intensive treatment unit and Jersey Neonatal Unit EPRs; and full Order Communications System integration with radiology, pathology and clinical investigations. “We are piloting structured clinical noting in some departments with the intent to go fully live in October. “Some of the delay has been around legacy infrastructure which has largely been resolved” Carpenter said. Jersey is now aiming to achieve HIMSS EMRAM Level 6 by year end or early 2026, which represents advanced data exchange and interoperability for improved patient engagement, clinical efficiency, and departmental insights. “This will also help us in wider plans to deliver better patient outcomes, access and value for money in care co-ordination across the wider system,” Carpenter said. A Health and Care Jersey board paper, published on 31 July 2025, states that £1.2 million was allocated “to expand connectivity around the main hospital block which will enable the EPR functions within the Digital Health Programme to run correctly”. “Testing of 2024 tactical WiFi improvements across 10 prioritised wards in JGH has been successfully completed and signed off by the EPR programme,” the board paper adds, with the “current forecast on this project in 2025 £0.9m, a possible underspend of £0.3m”. IMS MAXIMS was selected as the Government of Jersey’s preferred EPR supplier in October 2021, with the £29.3m system planned to be fully implemented by 2025.
