Occlusal device laser acupuncture therapy combo improves Myofascial Pain symptoms in TMD patients: Study

The researchers evaluated patients diagnosed with TMD who were randomly assigned to three groups: occlusal device alone, laser acupuncture alone, or a combination of both therapies. Pain intensity, functional limitation, and overall patient-reported outcomes were measured before and after treatment using validated clinical scales. Results showed that while both occlusal devices and laser acupuncture independently reduced pain and improved function, the combination therapy achieved significantly greater improvements. Patients receiving the combined approach reported faster pain relief, better jaw mobility, and a higher level of treatment satisfaction. Despite promising results, the researchers caution that larger studies with longer follow-up are needed to confirm the durability of symptom relief. They emphasize the importance of tailoring treatment to individual patient needs and highlight the potential role of multimodal therapy in dentistry and rehabilitation. The study adds to growing evidence that integrative approaches can improve outcomes for TMD patients, offering new hope for individuals who experience persistent myofascial pain.
