On-duty doctor assaulted at Sikkim PHC over patient referral

Gyalshing: In a recent case of violence against medical professionals, two individuals were arrested for allegedly assaulting an on-duty doctor at the Dentam Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Gyalshing district on the evening of September 5. According to the police, the incident occurred around 8 p.m. on September 5 when an injured patient was brought to the PHC for emergency treatment. After an initial examination, the doctor referred the patient to the Gyalshing District Hospital for further treatment. Following the referral, two attendants suspected of being under the influence of alcohol reportedly became aggressive. They allegedly verbally abused the doctor and physically pushed him, causing a disruption inside the health facility. They verbally abused him and physically manhandled him." The two accused are currently in police custody and being interrogated as part of the ongoing investigation. The assault has sparked widespread concern among the medical community in Sikkim, with doctors across the state condemning the incident and demanding stronger protection measures for healthcare workers, particularly those serving in remote and rural areas.
