The man behind the science: What supplements does Dr Nyjon take and why?

0 Mins
Dr Nyjon began his career in traditional medicine, building on his base of knowledge to pursue a more natural approach to health. He completed a PhD in Pharmacology, and MBBS and MRCP in Medicine but felt that clinical medicine wasn’t doing enough to help people; he was disappointed that modern medicine was more about managing symptoms of diseases rather than preventing and curing them. This led Dr Nyjon on the journey of looking outside of conventional medicine and has since pioneered his research and treatments using natural and non-invasive techniques. According to research published by the Kings Fund, while people are living longer, there is a rising trend in people managing multiple conditions as they age. Dr Nyjon believes that with the right approach, many health issues can be prevented rather than just treated at the final stage. He has turned to nature to aid in this endeavor. So, what does the doctor behind all these innovations take to maintain his health and help prevent chronic conditions? Let’s find out. Vitamin D3 with vitamin K2 Vitamin D3 with vitamin K2 are best taken in conjunction with one another. Vitamin D3, known as the “sunshine vitamin”, enhances the absorption of calcium in the intestines which helps contribute to immune support, bone strength and aids in lowering the risk of cancers. In order to get the maximum benefits of vitamin D3, it should be taken alongside vitamin K2. Vitamin K2, while lesser known, aids with the proper distribution of calcium within the body so that calcium is directed towards the bones and does not accumulate in soft tissues, arteries or organs. This helps with cardiovascular support. Dr Nyjon recommends that 50 – 100mcg of vitamin K2 should be taken per every 1000IU of vitamin D3. In general, we need to take 4-5,000IU of vitamin D3 daily. Carnosine complex The mitochondria are critical for cell energy production that helps to maintain all cell activity. As we grow older, our mitochondrial function decreases which results in the cells losing some of their structural and functional integrity. Carnosine complex helps to offset some of this decline in function leading to a more youthful cell function. Dr Nyjon recommends a dose of two Carnosine caps twice a day. Omega 3 Omega 3 plays a key role in lowering inflammation, maintaining cell membrane integrity and supporting brain function. However, these fatty acids cannot be made in the body and we need to get it from elsewherefood. According to Dr Nyjon, it can be obtained from good quality fish oil that contains a healthy supply of long-chain omega 3 fats. You can also get this from plant-based foods, such as flaxseeds, hemp or chia seeds, but these short-chain omegas need to be converted to long chains in the body and so a greater quantity is required. Dr Nyjon recommends 2g per day and you can get a list of the best graded fish oils from the International Fish Oil Standards website. Iodine Approximately 50% of Europeans are deficient in this critical mineral. It has a well established role in maintaining thyroid function but also helps in supporting breast and prostate health, general detoxification as well as acting as an antioxidant and alkaliser. It is found mostly in seaweed. Dr Nyjon recommends 12mg in your daily diet, which can be obtained by taking just one drop of 12% Lugol’s iodine. Advice should be sought from an expert if you have Hashimotos thyroiditis before adding iodine. Phytonutrients Phytonurtrients (plant nutrients) have important antioxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities and they help to maintain normal healthy cell function. We more often than not don’t get enough phytonutrients from our diets so it is important to take a daily supplemental dose of phytonutrients. All of the above supplements should be taken alongside a balanced diet and it is important to maintain an active lifestyle. Always consult a doctor first to get individualised recommendations on dosages. Dr Nyjon and his team live by the ethos that prevention is key to strengthening the body against disease and ageing, and nature can help with this.
